Synopsis
The film is about two men. Each of them dreams of the other and through those dreams gets to know about his life in detail. The first is Adham al- Masry, a business tycoon who despite his wealth leads a miserable life. The second is Watani Mina Abdel Malak, a poor, unemployed Copt from southern Egypt who also leads a miserable life.
The two men exchange places in a shift where the lines between dream and reality are blurred so that it is not clear whether this happened in real life or
whether each of them impersonated the other in his own imagination.
The film unravels the way each will manage upon replacing the other, especially in the light of the wide gap that separates them on the religious, social, financial, and even ethical levels. As the discrepancy between the two characters starts manifesting itself in several contexts, some comic and others tragic, each of them is eyed with suspicion by the people surrounding him. Suspicions take the most drastic shape when Adham is thought to have converted to Christianity and Watani is thought to have converted to Islam. It is, in fact, this particular suspicion that turns both their lives upside down.
Through a series of situations that arise from this confusion, the film poses a number of substantial questions, on top of which is whether karma does in fact control our lives. This question acquires more significance as the destinies of all characters in the film underline the role played by this theory of cause and effect.
